Dear Fellow Strongsville Republican:
Our March meeting had a tremendous turnout as many of you appear to be concerned about the direction of the country and realize the only way to affect true change is to get involved! Those of you who were unable to attend missed a pretty impressive line-up of speakers. State Senator Tom Patton updated the club on the status of various transportation issues and budgeting items that the Senate was considering. The Senator noted several proposals the federal government was blackmailing Ohio into passing and how he and our fellow Republicans in Columbus were opposing. He also discussed the major flaws and cost in the Governor‘s proposed plan to build a high speed train connecting Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati and how he was leading the fight on such wasteful government spending.
After the Senator spoke we had the pleasure of hearing from Steve Millard, the President of Cose (Council of Small Business Enterprises), who spoke about the very real dangers of the proposed Card Check legislation that is going to be voted on in Congress later this year. This is a very serious issue that if passed will cost American small businesses dearly and lead to more costs and probably more people losing their jobs. You can find more on card check at www.cose.org. Finally, at Steve’s urging - and I strongly encourage this as well-write your Congressman and US Senators to vote no on this bill.
After those two great speakers the Mayor gave us a sneak peak at his state of the City address and an overview of how despite the current economic climate the City is weathering the tough times with sound fiscal policies he and council implemented over the past several years. I have to say again that we truly are lucky to have a Mayor who had business experience and was able to make tough decisions during the good years so that Strongsville is much better positioned in difficult economic times such as we find ourselves today. Finally, Chairman Rob Frost of the Republican Party of Cuyahoga County gave a quick update on county politics and our search for a candidate for the Berea Clerk of Courts.
Looking ahead to April, in lieu of our monthly meeting in April we will have a networking social at Molly McGhee’s. This is a good chance to get to know other club members as well as network for those of us who may have experienced the unfortunate reality of a job loss during this recession.
Finally, please mark your calendars for Wednesday May 13th, when the club will be sponsoring a fundraiser for our scholarship fund for local republican high school students. It will be at J bellas in Strongsville. More details to follow. Look forward to seeing you on April 13th and May 13th!
Finally to paraphrase Ronald Wilson Reagan – “A recession is when your neighbor loses his job, a depression is when you lose your job, and a recovery is when Obama loses his!”
As Always -May God Bless America.
Gordon
